Paper # 1: Where Am I Essay

The purpose of this paper is to explore how your past will influence you as a leader. You have had different experiences throughout your life that have shaped the person that you are today. As your first assignment for this course, you will explore the people, events, experiences, and relationships (forces) from your past that you believe in some way influenced who you are as a leader. The paper should also include a reflection of which of the 17 competencies you feel competent with and which competencies you know need improvement. Length: 2 pages. This essay is required to be part of your Competent Leader Portfolio (CLP), but it cannot count as documentation proving a competency. Please refer to Moodle resources for specific CLP guidelines.

Paper #2: Leadership Statement

Statement of Leadership must incorporate or reference a leadership reading, theory, or leader used in class or from a source outside of class. Must include your own definition of leadership; we are not looking for a dictionary or scientific definition, but simply for the way you personally define leadership. Length: 1 page. This essay is required to be part of your Competent Leader Portfolio (CLP), but it cannot count as documentation proving a competency. Please refer to Moodle resources for specific CLP guidelines.

Project # 1: Observing Leadership

Attend an event on campus and share with the class (1-2 minutes) your take-a-ways as well as how / where you observed the leadership principles and competencies before, during, after that event. A list of upcoming events can be found at: http://events.whittier.edu

Due: Wednesday, March 9th from 11:00am – 1:00pm in Lower Quad

 

Paper # 3: Observing Leadership Reflection

Reflect on your experience. Share lessons learned. What surprised you? What did the leaders at the event do well / not so well? What are some take-a-ways that you can use in your own leadership tool box.

Length: 1 page

Due: Week 6 – March 9th or 10th

 

Project #2: Community Service

Complete a minimum of five community service hours. The hours can be completed on or off campus, but they should be meaningful to you. You must obtain documentation stating the date(s) and time(s) of your hours signed by the supervisor of those hours.

Paper # 4: Community Service Reflection

The purpose of this paper is to reflect on your five community service hours required as part of the course. Include in your reflection the answers to the following questions:

  1. Where did you decide to complete your hours and why?
  2. How was your service experience (feelings, thoughts, lessons learned and/or observations)?
  3. How do you think this experience can assist you as a leader?
  4. Do you believe that service contributes to positive social change?

Length: 1 page

Paper # 5: Where am I Going Essay & 5 Year Goal Statement

The purpose of this paper is to solidify your own definition of leadership, to demonstrate what you’ve learned in the class, and to identify your biggest future impact. Please include your original and revised mission statement along with this assignment. This essay is required to be part of your CLP, but it cannot count as documentation proving a competency. Please refer to Moodle resources for specific guidelines. Length: 2 – 3 pages.

Due: Week 11 – April 13th or 14th

 Competent Leadership Portfolio (CLP)

Show us what you’ve got! Prove that you are a competent leader by demonstrating at least 6 of the 17 competencies defined by the course. Website must include: Statement of Leadership, Personal Mission Statement, Five Year Goal Statement, Resume, Cover Letter, as well as documents supporting your competency. Documents may be (but are not limited to) videos, photos, letters of recommendation or support. Please refer to Moodle resources for specific guidelines.
