Local Community Service Opportunities

In order to cultivate the ability to facilitate positive, responsible change on campus and within the community, one of the requirements of this course is community service. This requirement can be completed on or off campus. The list of community service  opportunities below is not exhaustive . If you are not interested in these opportunities, you are permitted to find something else. Overall, this is an experience that they should be meaningful to you.

You are required to complete a minimum of five community service hours.

The Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Whittier

Duties: Positions for various community projects in local setting.

Shelter’s Right Hand Women and Children’s Crisis Shelter

Duties: Thrift Store OR Childcare, clerical work, assisting and participating in various fundraising events and other opportunities.

This is not in walking distance but is close to a bus line.

Salvation Army

Duties: Thrift Store OR Volunteers are mostly used for tutoring and childcare services for the residents and the families utilizing the Salvation Army and its Transitional Living Center in Santa Fe Springs.

Whittier Hospital Medical Center

Duties: Volunteer opportunities within the hospital setting for 16-18 year olds. Student must commit to a minimum of 30 hours of service. Call for details andorientation meeting times.

Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital 

Duties: Ages 16 and over; training provided in order to assist hospital staff with clinical and non-clinical duties; application and selection process includes teacher recommendation and formal interview. Student commitment of at least 100 hours per year required.
